5th Year is a comprehensive program that encompasses professional and soft skill education so you can lead an independent adult life.

During the nine-month program, you’ll spend time with business leaders who provide real-world learning experiences and connect with local and regional entities.

Each semester includes internship opportunities so you can put your lessons and knowledge to the test.

That’s where 5th Year comes in.

Students have successfully developed their business and professional skills for a successful transition into their chosen path, whether post-secondary education, employment, military service, or another path.

Financial Health and Independence

Students have established a personal budget and are equipped with essential skills for managing personal finances, saving, and investing to lay a foundation for long-term financial security and independence.

The inaugural 5th Year
session begins on
August 26, 2024, and
ends May 10, 2025.

The weekly schedule consists of personal and professional development on Monday, career exploration on Tuesday and paid internships Wednesday through Friday.  Optional independent living activities are available during the evenings.

Monday: Personal Development Day

9 a.m. – 10:15 a.m.: Lourdes LUC Class
Explore career development, identify your strengths and interests and determine where you are in the process.

11 a.m. – 12 p.m.: Personal Finance
Meet with advisors and discuss budgeting to gain financial independence. Topics include:

  • Budgeting, saving and spending
  • Investing and building wealth
  • Effects of credit and debt
  • Understanding taxes and insurance

12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.: Lunch

1 p.m. – 4 p.m.: Professional and Life Skill Development and Community Service Projects

Tuesday: Career Exploration

8 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.: First Onsite Job Visit

12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.: Lunch

1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.: Second Onsite Job Visit
Visit two local organizations each week and learn about career opportunities in various industries, including but not limited to:

  • Business and finance
  • Health and life sciences
  • Government, law and public service
  • Technology
  • Architecture, engineering and construction
  • Advanced manufacturing and logistics
  • Agriculture, food and natural resources
  • Hospitality and tourism
  • Educational institutions
  • Military

Wednesday – Friday: Paid Internships

8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Gain hands-on experience during two 13-week paid internships based on your career interest. Internships are divided between fall and spring semesters.

Do 5th Year participants take tests and receive grades?

No, but you must complete a capstone presentation at the end of the nine-month program.

Do 5th Year students earn college credit?

Lourdes University will provide six credits if you enroll as a full-time student after completing the program. Additionally, we will provide opportunities for students to earn industry-recognized credentials and certifications.

Who leads the personal development session?

Monday personal development sessions are led by representatives from partnering companies and organizations. The 5th Year team also contributes to instructional sessions.

What is LUC?

Lourdes University Connections is a program that provides opportunities to discuss personal success. Students learn about building connections, career options and communication strategies.

Do personal development session topics vary?

Yes. Each workshop is up to the business leader’s discretion based on the topic. Students learn about financial, professional and life skills each week and build off previous lessons.

How do I get to campus?

Lourdes University’s campus is a short walk or drive from the apartment community.

Is there transportation for onsite job visits and internships?

5th Year will provide transportation to and from onsite job visits and internships when necessary.
